Mary Kept These Things and Pondered Them in Her Heart

$12,000 36" X 48" oil on linen canvas. 2009 Contact me for more information.

Don't tell me that Mary didn't wear a magnificent blue veil on her way to Bethlehem, because I don't care! There's enough recent paintings of Mary in drab, boardy tunics that look like a down at heels Christmas pageant costume. I've seen quite enough Mary and Josephs in bathrobes, with towels draped around their heads, and I won't be a part of any more. For two thousand years artists have been depicting Mary in the clothing that they and their audience found attractive and exotic, but still familiar. Yep, I've ignored historical authenticity and gone for drama and color. So shoot me! The model is the fabulously glam young mom, Caci Chapman, whose blog is here, and the donkey is a loaner from my neighbors, the Roundys. I photographed the painting intermittently as I worked and made a little video of the process.
